Our True Hope Day 11 – Who Can Stand

Our True Hope Day 11 - Who Can Stand Bible Reading: Malachi 3:1-4, 4:4-5 Malachi is the fifth prophet we have read about who foretold of the coming of Christ.  Malachi, like Isaiah, told not only of the Messiah to come but of the messenger God would send before Him to prepare the way.  That messenger was John the Baptizer who proclaimed the coming of the Lord Jesus before Jesus’ public ministry began. God spoke a challenging word through Malachi, "But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears?"(Malachi 3:2). This [...]

We All Need Comfort

Our True Hope Day 9 - We All Need Comfort Bible Reading: Isaiah 40:1-11 For some, Christmas is a time of joy, happiness and fond memories.  But for others, Christmas is a time of pain and sorrow.  Maybe you lost someone dear to you at Christmas, or the holidays are simply a painful reminder of past abuse or trauma. For those who struggle with depression, the festivities and gatherings of Christmas can magnify your loneliness. Isaiah is ordered by God to take a word of comfort to the people of Israel who were going through a challenging period. [...]

Our True Hope Day 8 – Someone Get Excited!

Bible Reading - Zephaniah 3:14-20 Zephaniah is another prophet of God who joined the other prophets in bringing a message of the coming Messiah!  What was one of the primary purposes of Jesus coming?  He was coming to "take away our judgments." (Zephaniah 3:15)  That truth should get us excited! I'll never forget when I had to go and be a character witness in a Philadephia court on behalf of a young man who I knew from my youth program.  He made some poor decisions and was expecting to receive minor sentencing.  However, the officers destroyed video proof of [...]

Our True Hope Day 7 -Rejoicing in God, His Promise Still Stands

Our True Hope Day 7 -Rejoicing in God, His Promise Still Stands Bible Reading: Isaiah 61:1-4, Isaiah 61:8-11 Isaiah 61 is another word that God spoke through the prophet Isaiah about the coming Messiah.  In Luke 4:16-21, Jesus began his public ministry by reading the prophetic passage Isaiah 61:1-2 in the temple. He declared to all those present that the prophecy was being fulfilled by Him!  As Jesus began to minister to those in need, heal the sick, provide for the poor, restore the broken, and reconcile humanity to God through his death and resurrection, the [...]

Our True Hope Day 6 – God’s Chosen Servant

Our True Hope Day 6 - God's Chosen Servant Bible Reading: Isaiah 42:1-9 The celebration of Christmas is celebrating God sending Jesus to the earth as his servant with a mission.  That mission was to bring justice to the nations, give strength to the weak, demonstrate God's righteousness, and remind people of God’s covenant (promise) to them!  God declared all of this would happen long before it happened (Isaiah 42:9) so that everyone would know that He is God.  And God poured out his Spirit on his servant Jesus (Isaiah 42:1) so that everyone would see the power of [...]

Our True Hope Day 5 – Jesus Makes the Impossible Possible

Our True Hope Day 5 - Jesus Makes the Impossible Possible Bible Reading: Isaiah 35:1-10 Taking time to reflect on the coming of Jesus is to literally grab hold of hope for the most discouraging and impossible situations in life.  As you read Isaiah 35:1-10, he is prophesying of the Savior Jesus to Come.  "He will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.” (Isaiah 35:4-5). This passage seems impossible [...]

Our True Hope Day 4: Our Righteous One

Our True Hope Day 4: Our Righteous One Bible Reading: Jeremiah 23:5-6, Jeremiah 33:14-16. When God speaks a word, we know it will happen.  When God speaks it twice and three times, we know there is no way it can be changed.  God spoke through the prophet Jeremiah on two separate occasions.  Once recorded in Chapter 23, and again in 33, almost word for word.  And the word was spoken that a Righteous Branch will come from David’s offspring! This sounds very similar to Isaiah 11:1 of yesterday’s reading!  "Behold, the days are coming, declares the [...]

Our True Hope Day 3: Hope Has Come

Our True Hope Day 3: Hope Has Come Daily Reading: Isaiah 11:1-10 As we celebrate the coming of Jesus, we are reminded this is a season of hope. We focus on the  God of restoration and redemption.  What looks hopeless and dead in the natural, with God’s power, can come alive again for those who believe. Areas in our lives where we think we have failed, God can renew and restore. A Dead Tree Stump What is more hopeless and dead than a tree stump?  When a tree is cut down, often the stump is left [...]

Our True Hope Day 2: Will We Listen to Jesus?

Our True Hope Day 2: Will We Listen to Jesus? Daily Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-19 We are people who don’t long to hear from God.  How quickly in history did men go from walking with God in the garden (Genesis 3:8), and living in close fellowship with God (Genesis 5:22), to running in fear from God’s voice (Deuteronomy 18:16).  This is the destructive result of sin and worldliness in our life.  Even when we have experienced closeness with God, sometimes our sin leads us away toward fear and shame causing us to reject the voice of God in our [...]

Our True Hope Day 1: Why are Things Messed Up?

Our True Hope Day 1: Why are Things Messed Up? Bible Reading - Genesis 3:8-15 Genesis 3 might be one of the saddest chapters in the bible.  It comes right after the true account describing God's creation of a perfect world, with a beautiful  garden of paradise called Eden. He looked at all He had created including His masterpieces, the man and woman created in His very image, and He declared it all excellent and good! It was the work of a perfect God.  Adam and Eve had companionship, purpose, and pleasure, and yet... it all [...]

Be a kid again!

Vacation Bible School We had an amazing week at VBS last week, and continue to thank God for all He has done through it.  As I reflect back, I am reminded that Jesus calls us to learn from children, and even be like children! Matthew 18:3-4, Jesus says “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” So what did I learn from the 90 kids I saw all last week? Kids are [...]

The Deal Family | Missionaries in Senegal

Brett & Elise Deal Daphne, Ava, Henry, and Fiona ENTERING THE UPPER ROOM - In the heart of Parcelles, one of the largest neighborhoods of the Northern shore of Dakar, sits a five story hotel. Whose Family Do You Belong To?

Have you ever wondered why there are so many family genealogies in the Bible and what are they there for? It reminds us, throughout history and in the Bible, that family lineage was extremely important. Whose family you came from or belonged to was a big deal. Some of us like our families, some of us might struggle with our families, but the reality is, we came from them, and they “gave birth” to us. Have you ever done something, acted a certain way, or said something and thought, “Wow, I am just like my parents?” You probably have, because [...]

We Can Call Out to God, Anytime and Anywhere

Written by Pastor Devin Blankenbiller Welcome to 2017, where our culture and technology is constantly changing around us.   Cars are built with so many safety features that they are built to stop on their own, mini robots and drones are being used more in industry, and yes, we do almost everything from our cell phone.  A research study done by digitaltrends.com said that the average America spends 4.7 hours on their cellular devices a day.  If the normal person is awake for 16 hours, that is over one-quarter of their time awake is on their devices.  That time is [...]
